Montenegro now has its first mobile blood donation unit, made available to the Institute for Blood Transfusion to facilitate blood collection campaigns and bring blood donation closer to communities across the country.
The blood donation truck was officially unveiled on 3 April, in the presence of Vojislav Šimun, Montenegro’s Minister of Health, Marina Sekulić, Director of the Institute for Blood Transfusion, and Rusmir Džudžević, State Secretary at the Ministry of Public Works.
Bringing blood donation closer to communities
Thanks to this new mobile blood donation unit, Montenegro’s Institute for Blood Transfusion can organise blood drives every day across the country, particularly in municipalities located far from major healthcare centres or without blood transfusion services.
This is an important step, as the country has not yet reached the recommended blood donor rate of 4% of the population. By going directly to local communities, the aim is to make blood donation more accessible, encourage new donors, particularly young people, to give blood, and help maintain sufficient and consistent blood supplies.
Donors can therefore give blood close to where they live or work.
A bespoke layout designed for donors
Designed to welcome donors and make the work of blood collection teams easier, this mobile unit has been custom-built to support every stage of the donation process, from reception and the pre-donation medical consultation through to blood collection. It brings together all the spaces and equipment required to carry out blood drives effectively:
- A reception and waiting area at the entrance to the unit
- A private medical consultation room where donors can be seen in complete confidentiality
- 3 blood collection stations equipped with dedicated blood donation chairs
- A 100-litre blood bank refrigerator for storing collected blood bags
- A worktop with hot and cold running water and integrated storage
- Reversible air conditioning and ventilation to ensure comfort on board
- Fresh water and wastewater tanks to ensure the unit can operate effectively in the field
